Tanning – do you bake or fake?
Spray tanning is so big these days. Who would have thought that not that long ago spray tans were not available as widely or as cheaply as they are today.
Only 10 years ago we were all gladly baking under the sun or using sun beds in search of that golden brown glow ...Usually ending up bright red or burnt in the process. Not forgetting the damage to and aging of our skin!
Chatting with some friends recently and reminiscing of the good old days got us on to discussing how easy it was to look good today! With the amount of amazing product developments over the past decade...items that have now become favourites such as GHD straighteners, hair extensions and eye lash extensions to name but a few, looking good has never been easier or more enjoyable!
We could hardly believe that a mere 10 years ago (does that make us sound old???) most of these wonderful things were not in existence and we had to do our best with what we had. We were either baking or faking badly with instants which streaked and ran in the rain.
St Tropez and Fake Bake were like god sends as many of the early spray tans gave a distinctly orange glow! It must be almost 5 years since Donna undertook the St Tropez Tanning course but hey only a few years on, and evolution has seen the creation of more tanning products some good with fantastic colour and coverage and some well let’s say not so good.
At Totally Gorgeous we have tried most of the salon sprays tans on the market. Whilst at one time Fake Bake and St Tropez were all the rage, to be honest we barely get asked for them these days.
One of our favs and salon staples is Tan Truth. It is ever popular with our clients for its natural looking golden glow
Whilst one of our newer additions, Laurens Way Tan suits those who want a deeper more Glam tan.
We also stock the Laurens WayTan self applied range.
Our latest tan He-Shi is perfect for everyone including gents (its designed to be unisex) due to the gorgeous natural looking golden tan... you would never know it was fake I swear!
We just love the the adoring comments.
We are also secretly pleased when people think it’s because we have been on holiday rather than a had a spray tan!
Faking it (spray tanning) is definitely better for your skin than traditional tanning methods and has the additional bonus that it can be year round and practically instant. It has moved on so much that if you haven’t tried it recently, we would urge you to get one now.
You will be amazed at how quick and comfortable the spray tan is and how quickly you can have your clothes back on, particularly if you had experienced home based tanning lotions and the experience of waiting for hours for them dry!
Similarly the orange hue is no more, thankfully. With a whole host of brands and shades available, varying from light natural glows to deep dark bronzes... the shade of tan is totally to your preference.
Please see the following guide for furtherinformation on the spray tanning process and what to expect.
When Should I get a spray tan?
If you would like to be tanned for a special event we recommend coming in to for your spray tan the day before, or as close to the event as possible (tans develop in between 4 – 12 hours depending on what solution you go for so you should at leave at least this length of time before you shower)
How often should I get a spray tan?
You can get a spray tan just one time for a special event or you can visit us once a week to maintain a year-round glow. It is best to exfoliate any old self tanner from your skin before coming in for a fresh application.
Do I need to exfoliate before I spray tan?
It doesn't hurt to buff your skin a bit before coming to the salon for a spray tan, but you only need to seriously scrub if you already have old self tanner on your skin.
How should I prepare for my spray tan?
Do any waxing, shaving, manicures or pedicures before you come for your spray tan. If possible, come with clean skin, no lotions, make-up or deodorant (although you may take this off once you reach the salon, if you prefer.) Bring something a little bit loose and dark to wear after your spray tan. Don't go to the gym and avoid sweating immediately after being sprayed. Avoid the rain, bring an umbrella with you just in case!
What should I wear for my spray tanning session?
That depends if you want tan lines or not. If you don’t want tan lines you should skip undergarments. If you prefer to wear your own undies or swim wear chose something black - although the tinted self tanner washes out of most fabrics it can stain some. Also, the clothes you choose to wear home after your spray tan should be loose and dark - a little self tanner can come off on the inside of your clothes right after you are sprayed.
What can I expect whe I visit Totally Gorgeous?
At Totally Gorgeous our spray tanning booths are privately enclosed and situated within our gorgeous treatment rooms. The spray tanning booths have attached private dressing areas ensuring total privacy during your tanning experience. Our booths are permanent (we don't use pop up tents), generously sized and fitted with extractors to make the experience as comfortable as possible for you.
When you arrive at the salon, the technician will show you to the spray booth and dressing area and you will then get ready for your spray tan by getting undressed. You may choose to wear your own underwear, a pair of our discreet paper panties, or nothing at all - whatever is most comfortable for you.
If you have on nail polish or a light colour on your fingers and toes we will gently cover your nails with a thin coat of barrier cream to prevent discoloration. We do encourage you to wear one of our shower caps to help protect your hair as well.
We will then discuss your preferred shade of skin colour and which tanning solution you would prefer.
The actual spray tan process only takes a few minutes. The technician will show you step by step all the different positions to stand in as your body is coated in a glorious new bronze. The tinted spray tan feels like a cool mist, most people are pleasantly surprised that there is no smell.
As the spray tan goes on you will immediately see colour appear on your skin. This is the 'colour guide' and allows the technician to see where the spray tan is going. This initial colour is attractive, and gets a little darker when you leave and the actual self tanning product starts to work on your skin.
After being sprayed we will use the special function on our tanning machines to“blow dry” your tan. We will then leave you to in the private spray booth to dress.
How does the spray tan formula work?
Spray tan, or self tanner (DHA) is not a cosmetic. The active ingredient soaks into the upperlayers of your skin and causes the superficial layers of the epidermis to oxidize. It is similar to the reaction that occurs when you cut an apple and it turns brown. The active ingredient (DHA) occurs naturally in sugar beets and has been approved for application to the skin since the 1950s. It is a safe, well tolerated product. Most dermatologists highly recommend self tanning as an easy alternative to the sun's harmful rays.
How long should I wait to shower after my spray tan?
You should wait anywhere from 4 to 12 hours to shower. If it is your first spray tan it is best to wait a full 8 hours. During your shower you will see a tea colour rinsing off of your skin. Don’t worry your tan is still intact! This is just the colour guide rinsing off and is meant to happen. Before you shower you may look quite dark as you will be seeing the developed self tanner with the colour guide on top - after you shower, the tan will look quite natural.
How long will my spray tan last?
Your spray tan will last anywhere from 4-5 days to over a week, depending on: How much time you spend in the shower or bath; What products you use on your skin, body, and hair; How often you exercise and sweat
Can I choose the shade of my spray tan?
Yes! You can choose anything from a healthy glowing tan to a deep tan; although there is no 'colour chart'. We will help guide you toward a choice that will work well with your own natural skin colour. Because the spray tan product works with your skin's natural chemistry, no two people will have the exact same result. Our spray tan product is known for giving a natural, warm colour - not orange, yellow or ashy like some other self tanning products on the market.
My spray tan is starting to fade how do I get it off?
Contrary to popular belief you can't just scrub off the spray tan. If you don't believe us - give it a try! The spray tan is attached to the upper layers of your skin and gently fades as your skin exfoliates. If you go into the shower with a grainy scrub you will have very little success removing the tan. The thing to do is to take a long soak in a tub (saunas and Jacuzzis are also great) the idea is to soften the skin and get it steamy. Then is the time to work with a scrub, wash cloth, loofah or scrubbing mitts. Once your skin is soft from soaking in the tub, create a gentle lather with the glycolic body wash and let it sit on the skin while you gently scrub each body part. When you get out of the tub with skin warm and steamy, take a rough towel and buff the body - this will remove almost all of the spray tan. Then, just hop under the shower to rinse off.
